The Changing Maternal Healthcare Landscape and the Aymara Female Perspective

  • Project Proposal

The system Chile Crece Contigo, «Chile Grows with You,» was implemented in 2007 to protect the health of mothers and their children. I propose to study what changes this system brought to healthcare in Arica, Chile. I will analyze the system’s success and cultural validity by investigating the needs of Aymara women and their perceptions of the system. This study aims to show the importance of listening to all voices when designing healthcare initiatives.

I have lived in Arica as a student, but the Fulbright program would allow me to engage more deeply as a community member. I plan to live in a home-stay family to learn about the culture. Furthermore, I hope to combine my professional goal to work in public health with my love for direct service by volunteering at Teletón and working with children with disabilities. I am also interested in providing English tutoring, especially for Aymara children.

I will apply to medical school in order to become an obstetrician. In addition to becoming a practicing physician, I hope to pursue a career in global health, providing and designing initiatives to improve maternal healthcare. Immediately upon returning from the Fulbright, as I complete my applications, I plan to either continue to work in my public health laboratory, researching pre-term birth, or to work at a public health department.
