Development of Computer Vision Capabilities for Assistive Robotic Applications

  • Project Proposal

I will study and develop Computer Vision object identification algorithms so they may be used in assistive robotic applications. I will carry out this research at the Laboratorio de Robotica of the Universidad de Chile, under the mentorship of Dr. Javier Ruiz del Solar. This project will help advance assistive robotic technology for people living with disabilities and aligns with my aspirations to develop a revolutionary companion robot.

My goal in community engagement is to leverage my mentor’s connection with RoboCup@Home and my university’s academic connections, to establish a program whereby international students can work on a RoboCup@Home project while in Chile. I also plan to engage in community service as a way to gain a deeper understanding of Chile and build deeper bonds with the community. My native knowledge of Spanish will be instrumental in achieving all of this.

After my Fulbright Fellowship I will continue to work towards my goal of developing a revolutionary companion robot. Depending on the amount of knowledge and experience I gain over the course of my research, I aim to proceed to a dedicated graduate program in robotics or directly to a robotics firm that will give me access to the resources and colleagues I need to develop state-of-the-art, economically viable assistive robotic technology.
