Co-Creation in Chilean Mathematics Teacher Training

  • Project Proposal:

In my studies, I seek to learn from the Chilean context; “Which aspects of the co-created models of teaching in Chile might be useful for adoption for pre-service and teacher professional development in the US context?” Co-creation is a specific realm of agency-giving practices which include the making of learning opportunities in partnership with students.

I will conduct a case study using the model outlined by Robert Stake [The art of case study research, (1995).], the premier case study researcher in education. While Stake recommends collecting data en sitú continually, even before the project begins, I have already collected and analyzed copious amounts of data on the use of co-construction and Lesson Study in my own math pedagogy classes for pre-service teachers. This case-study of Chilean use of the Lesson Study model will analyze the design and implementation of the lesson study for the professional development for mathematics teachers, specifically for future partnerships with students in learning.

In partnership with the Director of STEM education in CIAE, Dr. Roberto Araya, I will have ample access to partnering teachers and schools for a sophisticated view of the co-creation of teacher training in mathematics. I will have access to teacher-training curriculum currently being explored by CIAE’s team of STEM researchers, particularly their very current work on the use of Lesson Study. This research will be the lynchpin of my dissertation research making up the final of the three papers on this topic. Systematically, findings will be shared with CIAE partners for program development and teacher improvement and member checking. This research will contribute to US and Chilean shared interests in improved teacher training.
